Creating a Family Vision Statement: Step-by-Step Guide

A family vision statement is a one or two sentence declaration of who your family is and what you're building together. Done right, it becomes the filter through which you make decisions — big and small. Here's how to create one that actually gets used.

Vision Statement vs. Mission Statement: What's the Difference?

Both terms get used interchangeably, and that's fine. But if you want a practical distinction: a family vision statement describes who you aspire to be — the future-oriented picture of your family at its best. A family mission statement describes how you operate — the principles and behaviors you commit to now.

For most families, writing one is enough. You can call it whatever resonates. The goal is a short, memorable declaration that your family actually believes in — not a corporate document that gets framed and forgotten.

Step 1: The Family Conversation

Don't write this alone. Gather the whole family — even young children can answer simplified versions of these questions. Set aside 30–45 minutes, no phones. Ask each person:

• What is one thing you love about our family?
• What's one word that describes what you want our family to be known for?
• What do we do together that makes you proud?
• What do you hope our family always does, no matter what?

Write down every answer. Don't filter or evaluate yet. The goal in this phase is to surface what matters to the people in the room, not to arrive at a polished statement.

Step 2: Find the Patterns

Look at what you collected. Certain words and themes will appear multiple times. Circle them. Common clusters families find: connection and togetherness, growth and learning, kindness and service to others, honesty and trust, adventure and curiosity.

Your top two or three clusters are the raw material of your vision statement. You don't need to include everything — you need to include the things that are genuinely distinctive to your family.

Step 3: Draft Using the Template

The most durable family vision statements follow a simple structure. Use this template as a starting point and edit until it sounds like your family, not a corporate memo.

The statement isn't a fixed artifact. It's a living document. Revisit it annually, or whenever the family goes through a significant change — a new sibling, a move, a child entering a new stage.
